7923 Creative Studies Diploma
This course is divided into 6 modules. Within each module there are a number of exercises to be completed for art/design, knitting and background knowledge. All the exercises in each module should be completed before the module is returned for assessment. All six modules must be completed to achieve the full 7923 Certificate.
Module 1
Research Project
- Select a theme and specific area of research
- Write a brief introduction
- Collect visual sources of information
Knitting, develop innovative and experimental uses of a range of single bed stitch techniques.
General Information
- Notes on the production of patterns
- Standard sizes and grading of patterns
Module 2
Research Project. Using the visual information gathered develop design ideas sufficient to support a Capsule Collection of 6 garments based on a particular season.
Knitting, develop a range of samples of double bed fabrics.
General Information, notes on
- A range of advanced tools and equipment
- Health and Safety
- Finishing techniques including fastenings
- Blocking and pressing
Module 3
Capsule Collection
- A minimum of 6 garments for a stated season, the design ideas being developed from the Research Project.
- A range of stitch samples edgings and finishing for the garments in the collection.
- One garment from the collection to be made, which can be either a cut and sew garment, a garment knitted on the double bed using a minimum of 2 colours, or a garment using hand manipulated techniques.
- The pattern for that garment must be written in 3 sizes
Module 4
Knitting embellishments to include quilting, pleating, felting, embroidery, painting, dyeing, addition of pre-knitted or other elements, patching and piecing

- Felt making and Health and Safety
- Yarn File - the production of novelty yarns including brushed, chenille, gimps, knops, loops, slub, snarl, tweed and twist.
Module 5
Develop design ideas based on a theme of your own choice to support the designing of a garment or item of soft furnishing.
Garment/item Assessment - choose from one of the two assessments not made in Module 3.
Cut and sew samples

Module 6
Develop design ideas based on a theme of your own choice to support the designing of a garment or item of soft furnishing.
Garment/item Assessment - make the Assessment not made in Module 3 or 5.
Illustrated Study of the History of Knitting.
- Origins, development and use of machine knitting from the 16th Century to the present day.
- Trends and design ideas associated with the use of machine knitted fabrics in fashion or interiors.
