Hand Knitting Workshops
The one day workshops I currently offer are:
Patchwork/Domino Knitting
A creative way to make original items of knitting using a variety of individual units. Choose from squares, strips or scallops, to mention just a few of the variations available to you in this exciting technique.
This workshop can be extended to two days to cover designing your own original garment/item using this technique.
Bead Knitting
There are many ways of using beads with knitting from embellishing a simple garment to make it unique, making precious purses, to creating unusual and original jewellery.
Choose from one of the following classes:
- Beaded knitting using beads within a garment.
- Bead knitted purses
- Beaded wristlets
- Bead knitted jewellery using nylon and wire.

Freeform Knitting
Freeform knitting is a technique which combines a variety of colours, textures and stitch patterns working in different directions, to create unique pieces of knitting. The knitting can be worked as one piece that continues to grow in all directions or many small pieces called 'scrumblings' which are joined together later when making up the item.
The technique can be worked in knitting alone, or it can be combined with crochet, and the pieces that are made can be tacked to canvas and blended in with canvas work as well.
Felted Knitting and Needle Felting
Felted knitting is a great way to make bags, slippers and soft furnishings among other items. Once the knititng has been felted it cal also be embellished with needle felting.

Colour Knitting, Fair Isle stranded knitting
Learn to work 2-colour stranded knitting with a yarn in each hand. During the workshop we look at the way colour can affect the appearance of the pattern and then students have the opportunity to start knitting a Fair Isle beret in the round working with a yarn in each hand.
Two-colour Slip Stitch
Knit two-colour patterns without the problems of working with more than one yarn in each row. This simple colour technique can be used to create some very unusual patterns and textures.
Using up your Stash, Gifts and small items
We all have a yarn stash including 'odd balls' you might use one day. This workshop looks at a number of stitch techniques to make the most of a variety of colours and textures within one piece of knitting. It also looks at a variety of small items that can be made from left over yarn e.g. fingerless gloves, scarves, jewellery etc.
Finishing Techniques
How to produce beautifully finished garments with knitting techniques. The workshop looks at shoulder shaping, 3-needle cast off, and picking up stitches around a neckline.
Socks
I currently offer 3 different sock knitting workshops, learn to knit a basic sock, toe-up socks and short row heel and toe socks
Learn to knit basic socks covers knitting with 4dp needles i.e. the stitches on 3 needles and knitting with a 4th. The workshop also covers the traditional heel flap and gusset style heel and grafted toe.
Toe-up Socks are worked on 2 circular needles (although 5dps can be used instead) and covers the Turkish cast on, a short row heel and a sewn cast off.
Short Row heel and toe socks can be worked on 5dp, 2 circulars or 'magic loop'. They are cast on at the cuff, the heel and toe are worked using the same short row shaping and the stitches are cast off using a variation of 3-needle cst off.
Lace Knitting
In this workshop stuents will learn to follow lace charts as well as knititng a number of samples of different lace patterns. The workshop will also cover the use of stitch markers to keep track of your pattern repeats in lace and 'life lines' in case you have to undo your knititng.
Cables, Travelling and Twisted stitches
In this workshop we look at a variety of cable patterns from traditonal cables, travelling stitches which move groups of stitches across the knititng indiagonal lines to Bavarian twisted stitch pattern. Students will also learn to read cable charts and will have the opportunity to knit a variety of samples in the day.
Beyond a scarf; Learn to knit from a pattern
This workshop is for beginners who have learnt to knit but are not confident about following a knititng pattern or how to work garment shaping to produce a well finished garment. during the workshop we go through the information provided by most commercially produced patterns and what this actually means in terms of knitting. During the workshops students also knit a mini garment front to put some of the shaping techniques into practice.
Knitting with Handspun
Looks at different ways of making the most of your handspun yarn and covers some basic principles of designing your own garment. During the workshop we look at different types of yarn and the most suitable stitch patterns for each yarn, the importance of making a test sample, a simple percentage system for designing a garment and some knitting methods of finishing your garment.
Reversible Fabrics
Learn to knit a variety of reversible fabrics.
Choose from one of the following
- Reversible rib cables.
- Two-colour Fisherman's rib and Shaker stitch variations.
- Double knitting.
